The woman leader of the fishers' federation in Northern Samar and the executive director of Trowel Development Foundation shared their experience on restoring mangrove forest in a panel discussion on, "Climate Solutions from Community Forests: Learning from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities." The event was organized by the United Nations Development Programme Equator Initiative during the World Conservation Congress of the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 1-10, 2016.
The two discussed how local fishers restored forest in 100 hectares denuded mangrove areas and protected 1000 hectares of existing mangrove forest. Both also pointed out that the mangrove forests saved the settlement areas in the municipality of Lavezares, Northern Samar province from the devastating impacts of Supertyphoon Yolanda.
Mangrove restoration also involves transplanting of seedlings in low-lying and continuously submerged areas. Director Rosario also reiterated the importance of strong community-based organizations in the protection and maintenance of the mangrove forest, and the support of local government in providing for a municipal ordinance that protects the mangrove forest.

Book Launch and Reception for Climate Solutions from Community Forests: Learning from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities
This event is an official book launch for the publication, Climate Solutions from Community Forests: Learning from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. The book features case studies on 22 community-based forest management initiatives, each a recipient of the prestigious Equator Prize. Organized around four themes – sustainable forest livelihoods, forest-friendly agriculture, forest restoration, and forest protection – the book draws from case material to illustrate how critical indigenous peoples and community-managed forests are to the achievement of global climate and sustainable development goals

The launch event will include a roundtable discussion with representatives from several of the forest initiatives featured in the book, as well as a presentation of key lessons learned from the case studies Among the featured initiatives is the project of Trowel Development Foundation, Philippines which uses mangrove restoration and aquaculture to improve local livelihoods, food security and climate resilience. The organization credits mangrove reforestation with protecting their coastal communities against the worst impacts of Typhoon Haiyan. Photo and story reprinted from Equator Initiative
